We have talked all about artificial fragrance and why you should replace all of the toxic products in your home, but when looking for safe swaps for fragrance that give your home that “fresh” smell, it can feel really overwhelming. I know this because I was there once and I had no idea where to start.
Even when you know that artificial fragrance is potentially harming your health, it’s easier to keep it in your home compared to getting rid of it. This is why most people do not swap out their harmful products for better items – it takes time, research, and effort. Most are comfortable with their products and have not experienced any adverse health effects yet (or maybe they have and have yet to connect the dots), so why switch them out?
I feel you. I see you. I was you.
That’s why I want to (hopefully) help you make the process a bit easier! Below, you will find a few safe swaps for fragrance in your home. In this post, I’m specifically writing about products that make your home smell good – room sprays, candles, glade plug-ins, etc. If I am missing a certain item that you’d like a swap for, please feel free to reach out to me. I would love to help you create a safer home for yourself and your family!

Safe Swaps For Fragrance In Your Home
- Room Sprays
I know SO many of you still use room sprays, such as Glade plug-ins, febreeze, and Mrs. Meyer’s room sprays, so I just want to add a little note on to this one. While you may think they smell good or hide the smell of your animals, all it is is a bandaid – and the blood is seeping through. Not only are these plug-ins harming your health, but they are extremely overpowering, especially to those who struggle with asthma, breathing issues, or have sensitivities to fragrance. I personally form a headache and get extremely dizzy when I walk into a room with a plug-in.
I recently found Grow Fragrance. I have NOT tried them out yet, but I am very excited to. They are toxin-free, cruelty-free, 100% plant-based, and they offer full ingredient transparency. They have air and fabric sprays in quite a few scents such as Ginger Pumpkin, Lavender, Bamboo, Black Currant Rose, and Citrus Cedar. If you are looking for a clean swap for febreeze or a clean swap for glade plug-ins, try this company out! When I try them out, I’ll let you know what I think.
- Beeswax Candles
Beeswax candles burns clean and gives off a slight honey smell. The good thing about beeswax? It also purifies the air! I love Welch Candle Co. (just beeswax), Heaven Scent Wellness (just beeswax + beeswax candles with essential oils), and Natural Sloth (beeswax with essential oils).

- Essential Oils
The key is quality when it comes to essential oils. I prefer Young Living OR REVIVE essential oils (more affordable, yet still quality). Diffusing essential oils is a GREAT way to create a non-toxic scent throughout your home. You can add them into your (non-toxic) cleaning products, diffuse them, or drip them on wash cloths and add them into the dryer.
- Indoor Plants
There are some houseplants that purify the air (studies straight from NASA) and there are also others that can add a scent into the air. Either way, adding in real indoor plants is a huge win for air purification and/or an added scent.

- Charcoal Bags
This is another trick for air purification/creating a clean smelling home. The brand that I’ve heard the most about is Moso and they claim to be completely safe, non-toxic and fragrance free. They say, “This unique odor eliminator is a safe and non-toxic alternative to scented air fresheners that merely mask odors and frequently contain dangerous chemicals, such as formaldehyde and petroleum.”
There you go – a few safe swaps for fragrance in your home! Do you have anything that I should add, or any other bad-for-you product that you’d like a safer, clean swap for? Please let me know because I am so happy to help you create a healthy and non-toxic home for your family.
