Every year, right around Halloween, I know that it’s the inevitable time of the year where I start gaining weight. It starts with the Halloween candy then leads into Thanksgiving with all the pie and carb-filled dishes. By the time Thanksgiving is over, it’s cold and I just want to eat comfort food all the way through (and most of the time, past) Christmas and New Years. Time to pull out the sweatpants and baggy T-shirts, right? Wrong. This year, I am committed to not feeling sluggish and not gaining ten pounds in one month. If you want to join me in this or learn more about what I’m doing, keep reading on how to feel your best around the holidays!
I’ve worked very hard over the past 6+ months to get where I am. I feel really confident with my body and that is because of all the hard work that I have put in at the gym and in the kitchen each week. Although I feel better than ever right now, I also know that it is very easy to get off-track and lose the improvements that I have seen. I don’t want to feel sluggish, or way too bloated. I also don’t want to start back from square one at the end of the holidays as I have done time and time before. That’s why I’m so committed to this – I not only want to keep the progress I have already seen but I want to keep progressing through the holidays and into the New Year.
Now, some of you may be thinking to yourselves that you haven’t really started a workout journey or a healthy living journey yet, so why start with the holidays? Let me just say one thing: the sooner you start, the better. I used to be one of those people that always said, “I’ll just start over in January,” or “I’ll start eating better after the weekend.”
That never happens. If I have learned anything from this healthy living journey, it is that you will never start if you keep pushing it off. Every single day you say no to healthy eating, or no to being active is just another day where you will not feel your best. Another day where your clothes won’t fit. Another day where you will look in the mirror and just sigh.
Stop saying no, Y’all! Say yes to yourself for once and go along with me on this journey, in order to feel your best, around the holidays and after them, as well.
How To Feel Your Best Around The Holidays
Drink enough water
I am very, very bad when it comes to drinking enough water, but I am doing everything I possibly can to fix this because I know it is very important. Our bodies are made up of about 60% water, give or take some, so when we are dehydrated, we are affecting and limiting the performance of our organs and body, in general. Drinking enough water not only helps our bodies function properly, but it can also help:
- Weight loss and/or weight management
- Brain function and energy levels
- Flush out toxins (so important!)
- Improve complexion
- Boosted immune system
- Prevent headaches
- Regulate body temperature
- Prevent injuries
- Improve heart health
- Your mood
- …and more!
Drinking enough water during the holidays is very important because it will flush out all of the food that you do eat, it will help us feel more satisfied between meals, and it can even help us eat less when it is time to sit down for a huge Thanksgiving dinner!
Stay on your workout schedule
This is a huge deal for me. Ian and I have been going to the gym three times a week for about six months now, without fail. Staying on your workout schedule during the holidays is challenging, but I am committed to sticking with it and I hope you join me! We love our workouts because they are never the same, they push us to be our best, and they help make daily activities (like picking up the box below) easier. It’s also known that working out boosts your endorphins, makes you happier, and makes you feel better about yourself. If you keep up with your workout schedule, you are more likely to choose healthier options, or at least limit the unhealthy options and even if you do splurge a few times, you will feel much better since you worked out vs. splurging when you have stopped working out.
In order to avoid the sluggish feeling that comes with massive amounts of holiday food, I am trying my best to eat as healthy as possible before and after the holidays and eat ‘bad’ foods in moderation during the holidays. I’ve tried the keto diet and I’ve heard that paleo is similar to it, but I wanted to try something different that would still give me health benefits while helping me feel great at the same time.
I did my research and I found out that eating a plant-based diet has so many benefits such as lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, lower rates of cancer, weight loss, and more. It’s also very economical and it helps the environment. But, I also realized that eating plant-based can be pretty timely and around the holidays especially, I just do not have the time to research recipes, shop for very specific ingredients, and spend a while making each dish.
I thought that because I did not have enough time, I wouldn’t be able to eat a plant-based diet and would have to go back to the drawing board, but that’s when I came across Veestro, a company that delivers 100% plant-based, organic, non-GMO, chef-prepared entrees, soups, and juices, nationwide. The great thing about Veestro is that you do not have to spend a ton of time making each dish. It shows up at my door, I freeze the meals until I’m ready to use them, and then I’m able to heat them up while doing other things around the house.
Veestro says, “Eating more plants has been proven to lower your risks of many chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Because you’re cutting down on saturated fats from meat, a plant-based diet can also make it easier to keep a healthy weight. Add in the known immunity-boosting benefits of plants, and you’ve got plenty of reasons to eat more plants.”
I’ve also learned from Veestro that almost half of the water used in the United States goes towards raising animals for food. In addition, almost one-third of the Earth’s land is contributing to deforestation. “Industrial animal agriculture is responsible for more greenhouse gas than all the world’s vehicles put together. Greening what you eat can actually lighten your footprint even more than greening what you drive.”
This fact alone made me want to start incorporating more plants into my diet. So, I tried Veestro out and I fell in love! We received the herb crusted turk’y dinner (pictured below), enchilada casserole, red curry, cauliflower milanese dinner, and the veggie empanadas. Everything that I have tried so far has been delicious and I am so excited to keep trying all of their other options. I actually have the red curry in my fridge waiting for me to try later today (yay!).
Veestro is not exactly like other meal delivery plans – there is practically no prep involved. You just heat it and eat it. It is so simple and I have been so, so impressed with these meals, Y’all! Even my photographer tried the herb crusted turk’y dinner with me and we were shocked that it wasn’t chicken or turkey. It truly takes like the real deal and I definitely do not feel like I’m missing out on anything (aka. meat) by going plant-based when eating meals from Veestro.
Veestro is all about making it simple to get more plants into your diet. They do not have the goal of turning everyone into a vegan. They are just promoting small (and easy) changes that you can make in your diet, in order to improve not only your health but the environment, as well.
Veestro, I applaud you. Thank you so much for making it so very easy to improve my health without spending a ton of time doing so.

Get enough rest
The holidays can be a busy and stressful time, so please remember to get enough rest! When you do not get enough of it, your immune system tanks, and it makes you much more susceptible to illnesses. I know that around the holidays, you probably have a lot on your mind and task after task to do, but do whatever it takes to get enough rest. For me, this means that I go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. This allows me to not only get enough rest but also get more done during my most productive time of the day (for me, that’s the morning!). If you are having trouble sleeping, try adding relaxing essential oils into your bedtime routine, limiting your screen time before bed, and you can also try adding yoga, or even add a bubble bath before bed, in order to help you wind down and relax your body + mind.
Don’t limit yourself too much
Last but not least, don’t limit yourself too much. Now, of course, you do not want to eat ten pies on Thanksgiving, but I truly believe in doing everything in moderation. For example, I try to limit dairy quite a bit in my diet, but ice cream is seriously one of my favorite things on this planet, so I allow myself to have it when I’m really craving it. If I limited my ice cream intake too much, I just know that I would go bonkers and end up eating way too much of it one day, leaving myself with a stomachache.
Take this thought process with you throughout the holidays – if you really want something, eat it! You are not going to set yourself back in your healthy living or fitness goals by eating one piece of a pie. Just remember: moderation is key!
At the end of the day, the holidays are something to celebrate and they allow you to spend much-needed time with your family and friends. Soak it all in and have a good time!
