Gone are the days where you invite 10 of your closest friends over for a birthday party and sit around blowing out candles and doing whatever else other adults do at low key birthday parties. We like to take it up a notch and go above and beyond for our birthdays. For example, we spent my most recent birthday exploring New York City by going on a Chinatown Food Crawl, visiting Delmonico’s, an iconic steakhouse, and eating our way around the rest of the city by visiting the best pizza shops (and of course, we had to try the best chocolate cake in the US, according to Food and Wine while we were in the area).
I’m just saying – we like to go out of the ordinary for birthday parties, which is why I think I’m the best person to write this article on how to plan a fun birthday party because you will not just be sitting around at a party I throw. This past weekend, we celebrated our neighbors birthday on a boat with 10 of her closest friends and it was a blast! We had blaring music, lots of fresh, seasonal food, and tons of fun to go around, and that is what inspired this post – FUN!! So, without further ado, let’s jump in:
How To Plan A Fun Birthday Party
Think Outside The Box
When I throw a fun birthday party, I always try to think outside of the box for a theme. Your traditional birthday party is fun and all, but take it a step above and do something different, like a birthday boat party, or a birthday tea, depending on the person you are throwing the party for. AmyBeth went with a birthday boat party and it was seriously a blast for not only her, but the entire crowd.
Seasonal food and hydrating drinks are a must when it comes to throwing any party, especially one that is out in the sun and water, such as a boat birthday party! For AmyBeth’s party, I made sure to bring plenty of hydrating, in-season food, such as fresh watermelon, sweet corn, tomatoes, and more + plenty of water and other snacks and drinks. In fact, Fresh From Florida sweet corn and watermelon are both now in-season in Florida and we (Georgia residents) get to reap all of the benefits from that! Praise the Lord – seriously. I always look for food, produce, and seafood labeled Fresh From Florida when I am in-store and you should, too.
Side note: This entire pregnancy, I really haven’t had any cravings per se, but I have eaten many, many watermelons. Some good and some not so good (just because they were not in-season), but now that they are in-season, holy moly – they are amazing! I am so thankful for the Florida Farmers who make it easy for me (and everyone else) to eat fresh produce year-round, especially during this pregnancy and during our boat party!
I was going to make watermelon popsicles for the boat birthday party, but time got away from me, so Ian just cut the watermelon up with a cookie cutter. This way, they were still special and cute, but really easy to prepare and serve. As for the corn, we made elote, or “Mexican Street Corn.” It was AMAZING, but a bit harder to serve on a boat (all of the cheese had already melted). The Guest List
First thing is first when it comes to planning a fun birthday party – you need to create an invitation list and you need to think long and hard about this list. The people you invite to any get together or party will make or break your event, so always think carefully about who you invite, before you invite them. Is it a family event? Are kids invited? Does everyone get along? These are just a couple of the questions you should ask yourself before creating the invitation list.
Music + Decorations
Music is essential in order to set the mood and a few decorations here and there never hurt anyone. Choose your music based on your crowd and based on the time of the day. I always recommend making a playlist before the big day so that you do not have to worry about it on the day of. Also, having a waterproof speaker is amazing because you can take it in or around the lake without having to worry about it! For decorations, a little goes a long way. Floats are good useful decorations that you can just throw in the lake when you anchor down, but whatever floats your boat (pun definitely intended). You really do not need too many decorations on a boat! The scenery around you is enough!
Last but not least, just make sure there are fun activities for everyone so that people have a great time and do not get bored! On a boat, it’s easy because you do not really need any additional activities, but at home, you will need some games such as corn hole, or something else to keep your guests entertained.
Have fun planning your birthday party – you can do it!
