A couples spa day in Calistoga isn’t complete without a rejuvenating mud and mineral bath at Baths at Roman Spa, located downtown. Famed for its “truly authentic spa experience in the beautiful Napa Valley,” I knew that Baths at Roman Spa was the ideal place to visit during my trip to Calistoga with my husband, Ian. This local tradition is supposed to remove toxins, promote relaxation, and bring relief to your joints and muscles, so it was the perfect finish to our wine country vacation.
Draped in robes and comfortable flip-flops, we were ready to take a dip in the healing mud and mineral waters. After being led back to our private room for two, we stripped down to our birthday suits, maneuvered our bodies on top of the mud, and wiggled ourselves down until we were covered in the mixture of volcanic ash, natural peat, and geothermal mineral water.
The feeling was weightless and floating – it was truly unique and unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. The temperature in the bath was right around 100°F, so you can imagine the amount of sweat that began to drip down our faces. Fortunately, the moment we felt too warm, our bath attendant saved the day with cool towels and flavored water to cool and replenish our bodies.
After the mud bath, our attendant told us to take showers, in order to remove the mud (which was actually extremely tricky – it wanted to stick everywhere!). Then, we were able to unwind in the jetted mineral bath. We enjoyed relaxing, laughing, and chatting together while sipping on our flavored water until it was time for our cooldown. This was such a relaxing part of our couples spa day in Calistoga!
Cucumbers and fresh towels adorned our faces, while we laid down on cool beds. Before our bath attendant left the room, she refilled our flavored water and sprayed a lavender scent around the room, promoting relaxation. After we cooled off and relaxed some, we got dressed and left the room with huge smiles on our faces and quite a few (amazing) memories to reminisce on in the future.
Ian and I shared quite a few laughs and a lot of joy that morning at Baths at Roman Spa. Although we did check a mud bath off of our Calistoga bucket list, we are already counting down the days until we can go back to experience it again. It is a unique experience that we will never forget! If you are headed to Napa Valley, I highly recommend that you do a couples spa day in Calistoga.
